AEO vs. SEO

What’s the difference between AEO and SEO, and how does it affect your organic search?

Google has slowly been taking space away from organic rankings. In its early days, the search results page was mostly organic — the classic ten blue links.

As the search giant evolved (and monetized), we started seeing ads. Google also introduced multiple updates to improve user experience and return the most relevant results possible (or at least as close as a machine can get).

Personally, I can live with Google’s SERP (Search Engine Results Page) even with all the sponsored results. But Bing? That’s something else. Bing’s SERP, for high-valued terms, usually begins with ads at the very top — marked “sponsored.”

Sometimes, the “sponsored” is mixed among organic listings. The label is quite small. I’m not sure most searchers even notice it. It makes those results appear as if they aren’t ads at all.

For brands doing B2C or B2B marketing on Bing, you might need to dig a little deeper into your budget to pay to play.

Spoken too soon: Google just announced that it’s “grouping” text ads under a single “Sponsored results” label. The single label will, of course, be larger. Google says, “This new, larger label stays visible as people scroll, making it clear which results are sponsored — upholding our industry-leading standards for ad label prominence.”

The Sponsored Results label will be positioned above a group of four text ads. In other words, no more “Sponsored” or “Ads” in front of individual ads. And when you do your usual scroll, those text ads will most likely look like an organic listing, ain’t it?

Over the past two decades, new features have continued to reshape the search experience: Featured Snippets, Maps, Product Carousels, and now, AI Overviews (AIO).

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are changing how searchers find answers. This shift has given rise to Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), a modern version of SEO built for AI-driven experiences.

If you’re a marketer, brand leader, business owner, or B2B/B2C executive wondering how AEO compares to traditional SEO, this guide breaks it down, covering strategy, structure, and measurable results.

What is traditional SEO?

It’s still SEO. The word “traditional” might make it sound outdated, but think of it more as the “original” version of website optimization. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) focuses on improving a website’s visibility in search engines like Google, Bing, and now, indirectly, in AI platforms.

The goal of SEO is to earn higher website rankings in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) and get people to click to your website through:

  • Keyword research and optimization
  • High-quality content that answers user intent
  • Backlinks from reputable sites
  • Technical SEO improvements (site speed, mobile friendliness, crawlability)

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization prepares your content to be referenced, summarized, or cited directly in AI-powered search results.

AEO is about making your content “AI-readable.” When tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini generate an answer, they pull information from trusted, authoritative sources.

Tip for brands

When your content is optimized to rank well in organic search platforms, it becomes easier for AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini to “read” and reference it.

If you’re not sure where to start, our ChatGPT SEO services can help you structure and optimize your site so your brand becomes part of the conversation.

In other words, traditional SEO helps your website rank and stay optimized so it can be recognized and mentioned by answer engines.

What are the differences between AEO and SEO?

When you look at the table below, you’ll notice that the optimization techniques for AEO are not entirely different from SEO at all. The primary difference lies in the platform — one focuses on the good old search engines, while the other focuses on AI-powered systems.

You still need strong, foundational SEO practices to lay the groundwork for visibility in answer engines.

Why AEO matters for large and small businesses

AEO matters because search engines are prioritizing AI answers above organic listings. Google AI Overview (AIO) displays for most informational search terms. In Bing, Microsoft Copilot displays answers before you see organic listings.

  • AI answers now appear above traditional results in Google’s AI Overviews, reshaping how users engage with search.
  • According to Pew Research, when an AI summary appears, users click through only 8% of the time — roughly half as often as with traditional results (15%).
  • Even more telling, 26% of users end their session entirely after viewing an AI summary, compared to 16% when no summary is shown.
  • Users are also spending more time with AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok, which deliver conversational, continuous interactions. Instead of searching and clicking, people stay engaged within the AI chat, asking follow-up questions, refining results, and getting context instantly.
  • This shift doesn’t eliminate SEO but redefines how visibility works. Brands now need to optimize for both semantic understanding and conversational discovery through AEO.

How to combine AEO with SEO in your marketing strategies

AEO builds on SEO, rather than replacing it. You need strong site architecture, optimized tags, proper Schema markup, quality content, fast load times, and authoritative backlinks.

When optimizing your website, combine AEO with SEO by:

  1. Building semantic relationships.
Use clear, connected language that helps AI understand how your brand, services, and topics relate.
  2. Creating content that answers questions directly.
Short, factual answers make it easier for AI to extract snippets.
  3. Leveraging entity stacking.
Get cited on reputable sites and directories in your industry.
  4. Using structured data (Schema).
Define your brand, services, and products for both search engines and AI models.
  5. Tracking brand mentions.
AI systems weigh credibility based on citations and references from authoritative domains.

How AEO helps with Google SGE

Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE), now AI Overviews (AIO), uses Gemini to generate AI summaries directly in search results.

Our Atlanta AEO marketing agency can improve your chance of being featured in AIO by:

  • Structuring your pages for semantic clarity and question-based sections
  • Strengthening entity signals through Schema markup and backlinks
  • Creating content clusters that demonstrate topical expertise
  • Publishing fresh, relevant information consistently

FAQs about AEO vs. SEO

Is Answer Engine Optimization worth it?

Yes. As AI search expands, optimizing for answer engines ensures your brand remains visible when users rely on AI-generated summaries instead of clicking links.

What do small businesses need — AEO or SEO?

Both. Every business, large or small, that has a web presence and wants to generate leads online needs optimization through both SEO and AEO strategies. Websites optimized for search engines tend to perform well in answer engines too.

Does AEO replace traditional SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO fundamentals — you still need keyword optimization, fast site speed, and mobile responsiveness. AEO enhances these efforts by focusing on semantic meaning and entity recognition.

What is GEO, and how is it different from AEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — the practice of building your brand’s authority so that large language models like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google Gemini include you in the answers they generate from scratch.

Where AEO focuses on being cited in AI-powered search results, GEO goes a layer deeper. It’s optimizing structurally to get your site a higher chance to rank in AI-generated results. In practice, the two strategies share a lot of the same foundation — structured content, topical authority, consistent entity signals, and citation-worthy writing.

What does Google say about AEO and GEO?

Google’s own developer documentation addresses both terms directly, stating that “optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”

What About 'AEO' and 'GEO'?

In other words, Google doesn’t treat AEO and GEO as separate disciplines — it folds them back into SEO fundamentals. Google specifically advises marketers to prioritize effective SEO strategies over what it calls “AEO/GEO hacks,” and flags tactics like unnecessary AI text files or inauthentic mentions as things you can ignore. The practical takeaway for your business: the agencies selling AEO and GEO as entirely new, standalone services may be overcomplicating it. What actually moves the needle is the same thing it’s always been — authoritative content, strong technical foundations, and a site that earns trust.

How does AEO help with Google SGE and ChatGPT?

AEO ensures your brand appears in AI Overviews (SGE) and AI chat responses by structuring content that AI models can interpret, summarize, and trust.

What are some SEO factors adaptable to AEO?

  • Content quality and relevance
  • Fast loading time and responsive web design
  • Authoritative backlinks and brand mentions
  • Clear hierarchy (H1, H2, lists, and Q&A)
  • Semantic structure and Schema markup

How do I start implementing AEO?

Begin by auditing your top-performing pages. Identify content gaps, build internal links between related topics, and optimize key pages for a concise, answer-focused structure.
